When life gives you lemons, you make _____________.  We all know the right answer. Lemonade. Lemonade is our summer go-to refreshment, but I won't lie. Most of the time when asked to fill in the blank I am going to say, “lemon drop martini” or exchange lemons for limes and insert jalapeño margarita + mashed cucumber, because that's the right choice too. The point is, when you are given a sour circumstance, this phrase encourages you to make something sweet.  I can get on board with that, but let's be honest, when in the midst of what life can bring that is not always the case. You cannot always make something sour immediately sweet. How does one process racial tension, the loss of a loved one, financial, physical, emotional crisis or… say… a pandemic, into a sweet antidote in a matter of minutes?

The answer: You don’t.

And for some, if you do, that wound that required a surgery + rehab receives a band-aid, and we all know the infectious result that ends up being. (I can hear a few internal thoughts now…  "Um, I was just excited about lemonade…”) Keep reading, I am almost there. I promise. Ice-cold citrusy sweet is on it's way - 10 ways to be exact. ;)

when life gives you lemons...

So without getting too philosophical in this recipe post, because I know why you are here, let's stick with the basics today; there is something I do want to say. If you are in the midst of any or all of the above circumstances, it's okay to not be okay. It's okay to not have the ability to fix or make something sweet out of the hard place or places you are currently standing, kneeling, sitting, or lying in frozen still. It's appropriate to grieve, half-function, take a minute to b r e a t h e.  It's also okay, if you are in a place sooner or later than you expected, where you can look at life and what it has thrown you and say, "It's time to make lemonade." There are many that may need to raise a glass today. Let it be therapy, squeeze every ounce of juice from that lemon, and make it extra sweet just for sweet's sake. Some of you may need someone else to make the lemonade. No matter where you are, may this glass of refreshment, however you like it or need it, give you a sense of hope as you gulp down an image of what once was, or what you hope it to be... a lemonade communion, so to speak.  We are here for it either way, recipes in hand. Below you will find how to make it fancy, fast, frozen, healthy, fun, or all the above, and scroll down if you just want the recipe already!

Enjoy, friends, and have not one but two glasses. It's the right choice, especially today.

make lemonade.

Lemonade Tips:

Lemonade FAST -

- Use hot or warm water to mix water with desired sweetener.

- Invest in a few kitchen tools such as:

      - a manual citrus press

      - blender

      - cheese cloth

      - or juicer

- Use a good quality from concentrate organic lemon juice. We recommend our fave Italian Volcano Organic Lemon Juice, or Santa Cruz Organic Lemon juice from concentrate

Lemonade ON THE GO -

- I like to put our lemonade in personal mason jars with ice for picnics.  It is a win-win b/c we don't have to bring cups or an extra pitcher.

- If you like having a pitcher along, I like this one as the lid secures well, and it’s great for lemonade stands.

- Whatever you do, make sure to add ice! ;)

Make it EXTRA:

- Add herbs and/or spices. (*See recipes below.)

- Change it up! Use lime or grapefruit juice instead of lemon or tea instead of water.

- Add sliced fruit such as citrus, berries, and/or melons for garnish.

- Add zest of lemon or lime.

- Juice other refreshing fruits and mix in such as melons and cucumbers.

- Create a cocktail or mocktails. (*See Recipes below.)

Lemonade 1

Make it FROZEN:

- Freeze into ice cubes and make lemonade slushies or frozen cocktails.

- Pour into your ice cream maker for a lemonade sorbet.

- Pour into popsicle molds and make popsicles!

Make it FIT:

- Add spices or supplements for health benefits such as:

- Substitute partial or all water with organic coconut water or unsweetened aloe juice.

- Add 1t. - 1T. organic apple cider vinegar with the mother per personal serving for a digestive aid cocktail.

MAKE it FUN! :

- Print our adorable printables for your own lemonade stand or lemonade party here

- Add fun straws of fun ice cubes!

- Let the kids help with any of the above!
